Eeling Power

It’s that time of year again – in front of my local supermarket, they’re set up for grilling eel to help you beat the heat. The term for the summertime blues, kind of the converse of cabin fever, is natsubate.

Especially in this land-locked region, it’s a swelter-busting tradition to get stamina from the nearly finless fresh-water fish, grilled over, in this case, what seem to be converted concrete gutter or culvert sections. Whatever cooks your goose, as it were.
